Biography
John trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and
began his career as a member of the Repertory Company at the Chesterfield Civic Theatre (now known as “The Pomegranate”).
Since then he has appeared all over the country in numerous productions from Shakespeare
to Agatha Christie, and from the West End to touring schools in a van. He was also the Associate Director for Sutton Theatres (including
the Secombe Theatre) and directed many of their productions, including Relatively Speaking by Alan Ayckbourn.

He has written a number of musical plays and has adapted stage versions
of Gulliver’s Travels, King Arthur and Just William - the first for many years. In recent years he has
played the part of Brooks in a BBC drama documentary about Thackeray. He has also directed the hard hitting drama Rat In The Skull by Ron Hutchinson and appeared in Canterbury
Tales, Woman In Mind, the musical review Tomfoolery, as the hapless Gilbert in Things We Do For Love
and as The Porter in Macbeth - all for
Tabs Productions. He has appeared in countless seasonal shows
and pantomimes, most recently a season at the Gatehouse Theatre in Stafford in Dick Whittington.

He has directed Alice In Wonderland
at the Leatherhead Theatre and worked on a film about Mary Tudor playing the part of Somerset. He has written
two books, Stage Acting Techniques and Understanding and Researching Scripts,
both published by Crowood Press, with a third, Performing Shakespeare, due out
next year. He is also a drama teacher and has just completed three years as Head of Drama at Newlands School. He continues to run his own part-time theatre school, SPATS, in London.
